In recent years, Jane Austen’s unfinished novels have attracted renewed scholarly interest through new editions, translations, and adaptations for stage, film, and television. Long overshadowed by her six completed works, these texts reveal narrative and stylistic experimentation and engage with themes such as female autonomy, diversity, and disability. This essay focuses on Sanditon (1818) and on its critical reception from Virginia Woolf to the present, placing it in dialogue with Andrew Davies’s ITV adaptation (2019-2023). The aim is to demonstrate how contemporary media reinterpretations can enrich unfinished works, transforming Sanditon into a site of ongoing critical and creative experimentation.

Abstract
In recent years, Jane Austen’s unfinished novels have attracted renewed scholarly interest through new editions, translations, and adaptations for stage, film, and television. Long overshadowed by her six completed works, these texts reveal narrative and stylistic experimentation and engage with themes such as female autonomy, diversity, and disability. This essay focuses on Sanditon (1818) and on its critical reception from Virginia Woolf to the present, placing it in dialogue with Andrew Davies’s ITV adaptation (2019-2023). The aim is to demonstrate how contemporary media reinterpretations can enrich unfinished works, transforming Sanditon into a site of ongoing critical and creative experimentation.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
