This review examines Sara Fani’s monograph on Arabic ink-making recipes between the 8th and 13th centuries. The study analyzes a corpus of five technical treatises, exploring the codicological and philological aspects of Islamic scribal culture. By translating and comparing historical recipes for carbon, iron-gall, and colored inks, Fani provides an interdisciplinary overview of book production, material history, and the professional role of the scribe in the medieval Arab-Islamic world.
