Abstract

Through a series of European case studies and two American ones examined in depth here, from the end of the Ancien Régime to Covid-19 and certain recent high-profile scandals, carnival and, more generally, feasts reveal themselves, in crisis situations, as rituals offering content and methods for social reconstruction. Regardless of how this recomposition occurs, the structure of communities, which are primarily urban but sometimes extend beyond the cities involved in the festivities, always emerges changed.
