This paper discusses the hitherto proposed interpretations of the use of the letters OY (possibly in the form of a ligature: ᴕ) in Auson. epigr. 87, 12, in a poem which describes cunnilingus and teacher Eunus’ activity by means of the Greek alphabet. After highlighting the difficulties of Adams’ hypothesis that the symbol indicates bull horns, it is suggested that OY be explained as the ‘philological’ abbreviation of οὔτως (outōs), in line with the use of theta (l. 13), both text-critical sign and symbol of death.
