We reiterate that further studies are needed to define the role of DOI in oral carcinoma histotypes other than OSCC. Due to their relatively low incidences, important areas of future research must include etiopathogenetic mechanisms, features allowing differential diagnosis, therapeutic strategies and prognostic markers.

Abstract
