This article intends to clarify the meaning of Antonio Genovesi’s ‘Civil Economy’ by disentangling dikerent topics: the issue of public happiness, the non-Aristotelian notion of pastoral government which underpins political economy, the role of legislators and Divine Providence in history, and mnally Genovesi’s own political project for himself and his pupils.
