The article examines South Africa’s energy transition at the intersection of the climate crisis, the legacy of apartheid, and the challenges of democratization. Since the early 2000s, an ambitious investment program has sought to reduce dependence on coal, yet contradictions have emerged: the risk of rising public debt, trade union resistance, and the marginalization of host communities. The “just transition” is thus a contested terrain among social justice, energy security, growth, and sustainability; the article offers a historical reading of it.

Il saggio analizza la transizione energetica sudafricana all’incrocio tra crisi climatica, eredità dell’apartheid e sfide della democratizzazione. Dai primi anni Duemila, un ambizioso programma d’investimenti mira a ridurre la dipendenza dal carbone, ma emergono contraddizioni: rischio di aumento del debito pubblico, resistenze sindacali, marginalizzazione delle comunità ospitanti.
