This article examines a number of issues related to the formation of the New Testament canon between the 2nd and 4th centuries CE, focusing in particular on the historiographical debate about the role to be attributed to Marcion (a debate recently revived by some publications by Markus Vinzent) and the discussion surrounding the Muratorian Fragment (reignited by a 2022 monograph by Clare K. Rothschild). The article surveys a range of studies on the development of the canon, outlines current research trends, and offers a critical assessment of the most debated hypotheses.
