This paper investigates Gian Francesco Malipiero’s relationship with the classical tradition, shedding light on his compositional processes and theoretical reflections. Particular attention is devoted to the music composed for the tragedy Ecuba, staged at the Greek Theatre of Syracuse, up to the writing of his own Ecuba (1940), highlighting Malipiero’s compositional choices from both musical and textual perspectives. The study also explores Malipiero’s interest in — and views on — ancient Greek music, including his correspondence with Manara Valgimigli. Drawing on previously unpublished archival materials, the paper offers an overview of a specific and little-known aspect of Malipiero’s production.

Abstract
This paper investigates Gian Francesco Malipiero’s relationship with the classical tradition, shedding light on his compositional processes and theoretical reflections. Particular attention is devoted to the music composed for the tragedy Ecuba, staged at the Greek Theatre of Syracuse, up to the writing of his own Ecuba (1940), highlighting Malipiero’s compositional choices from both musical and textual perspectives. The study also explores Malipiero’s interest in — and views on — ancient Greek music, including his correspondence with Manara Valgimigli. Drawing on previously unpublished archival materials, the paper offers an overview of a specific and little-known aspect of Malipiero’s production.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
