The paper offers a genealogical critique of disability as a historical cultural construct, animated in most recent times by the capitalistic socioeconomic logic as well. By interrogating the epistemological differences between the dominant models of disability – the social and the cultural ones –, the paper aims to address the multifaceted axes that concur in shaping ableism, namely the endorsement of an ideal subject and the consequent oppression of those who do not seem to fit. This regime is shaped, among many sociocultural and scientific narratives, by the conflation between “natural” and “normal”, whose outcome is the dehumanisation and marginalisation of the disabled subject.

Abstract
The paper offers a genealogical critique of disability as a historical cultural construct, animated in most recent times by the capitalistic socioeconomic logic as well. By interrogating the epistemological differences between the dominant models of disability – the social and the cultural ones –, the paper aims to address the multifaceted axes that concur in shaping ableism, namely the endorsement of an ideal subject and the consequent oppression of those who do not seem to fit. This regime is shaped, among many sociocultural and scientific narratives, by the conflation between “natural” and “normal”, whose outcome is the dehumanisation and marginalisation of the disabled subject.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
