Chickenpox is generally considered a benign childhood disease caused by varicella-zoster virus (VZV). However, in some cases, the infection may be associated with poten tially serious complications, such as neurologic manifes tations. The main forms of clinical expression of neuro logical involvement during VZV infection are acute cere bellitis (more frequent) and encephalitis. Encephalitis usually presents with frontal and temporal localization or vasculitic involvement. The paper presents a case of a 6 year-old child with an atypical localization of varicella encephalitis.
