The enduring presence of the Scythians in the literary traditions of the classical world and the ancient Near East was not sufficient to ensure a clear identification of their ethnic and linguistic identity. In the second half of the nineteenth century, the so-called ‘Scythian question’ emerged. Scholars debated whether the term ‘Scythians’ referred to a single people or to various populations bound together by a common way of life, and further disputed the language spoken by the Scythians. Today, the prevailing scholarly consensus holds that the Scythians were an Iranian people.

Abstract
The enduring presence of the Scythians in the literary traditions of the classical world and the ancient Near East was not sufficient to ensure a clear identification of their ethnic and linguistic identity. In the second half of the nineteenth century, the so-called ‘Scythian question’ emerged. Scholars debated whether the term ‘Scythians’ referred to a single people or to various populations bound together by a common way of life, and further disputed the language spoken by the Scythians. Today, the prevailing scholarly consensus holds that the Scythians were an Iranian people.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
