Responsible Management Competencies and the Role of Higher Education

This panel symposium invites participants to engage in a dynamic, moderated discussion on the role of Ethics, Responsibility, and Sustainability (ERS) in defining key managerial competencies and on Responsible Management Education (RME), particularly within Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). This panel symposium contributes to an ongoing debate that began in the 1990s on the importance of preparing managers to view the world not only from the point of view of businesses but also from that of the natural environment in which they operate. Over time, this perspective has evolved to incorporate a deeper consideration of social impacts as well. It focuses on responsible management principles needed by young graduates and, particularly, on the competences developed through HEIs, which are increasingly valued by today’s corporations to address current challenges. Specifically, this panel symposium aims to discuss the importance of developing competence framework for responsible managers which encompass the findings of responsible managers literature and sustainability literature. This approach emphasizes ethical decision-making, sustainability, and a long-term vision that balances economic, social, and environmental outcomes. Also, this panel considers the role of innovative pedagogies for preparing responsible leaders who are better equipped with competencies able to create value for all stakeholders. The symposium also seeks to reflect on the role of HEIs, individual educators and committed communities in advancing ethics, responsibility and sustainability, as well as on the impact and implications of digital technologies on RME.
