Supporting decisions models and tools for the design, management and control of a storage system are illustrated. In particular the proposed approach is based on the joint application of good allocation strategies and storage assignment rules. The allocation strategy deals with the determination of the best fraction of storage volume for each Stock Keeping Unit (SKU) while the storage assignment problem deals with the assignment of products to storage locations. A systematic procedure based on the application of different patterns has been developed and illustrated. It is based on the adoption of different strategies and rules for the allocation of storage volumes to products adopting a dedicated storage assignment, e.g. correlated storage rules, popularity, order closing, etc. Finally, a case study and results obtained by a multi-scenarios what-if analysis are discussed.
