Fernando Pessoa’s ontological meditations. Dream, Doubt and the Mystery of Being in O Marinheiro = As meditações ontológicas de Fernando Pessoa: Sonho, dúvida e o mistério do ser em O Marinheiro

This article proposes a philosophical reading of Fernando Pessoa's static drama The Mariner. The three watchers, protagonists of the play, navigate a maelstrom of doubts concerning dreaming and reality, ultimately perceiving their lives as a dream. The analysis suggests that this realization emerges when, questioning in a Cartesian manner whether their lives might be nothing but a dream, they undergo an experience that reveals the world in its absurd and mysterious existence. This perspective enables an exploration of a connection-never explicitly or systematically addressed in the history of Western literature and philosophy-between the experience of being and the experience that apprehends life as a dream.
