An unpublished archival record demonstrates that in 1535 Cardinal Giovanni Salviati sent a painting representing Phaeton to the connétable Anne de Montmorecy. This article identifies the author of this painting as Francesco Salviati and the figurative source of the painting with Michelangelo's drawing for Tommaso de' Cavalieri.
