The historiographical tradition has interpreted Alessandro Blasetti’s "The Iron Crown" (1941) as a pacifist film during wartime, primarily due to Blasetti’s own statements in later memoirs and interviews. This essay examines the film’s allegories in the context of fascist racial and war propaganda between 1938 and 1940, from the strengthening of the alliance between Italy and Germany to Italy’s declaration of war on June 10, 1940. Drawing on Blasetti’s archival records, this essay seeks to demonstrate the film’s alignment with the fascist propaganda, in representing the myth of an Aryan people fighting against a «demoplutocratic» regime.
