Currency domains. A reflection on multiplicity and the money of people’s experience

Jane Guyer’s primary focus in exploring money was on the“money of people’s experience.” Indeed, money is one of the most important things in people’s everyday lives, having economic, cultural, and political values, that reveal much about the communities and societies that use it. Money is handled, saved, imagined, desired, created, and recreated by the people who employ it. Thus, money matters beyond the macroeconomic context in which it circulates. For Jane Guyer, studying how people use money is a necessary starting point for reconfiguring an understand- ing of money around the concerns of anthropology and history. Through a brief exploration of the money of people’s experience, I revisit Jane’s critical contributions to the anthropology and history of money in Africa, one of her many areas of expertise.
