In this paper I offer an account of the kind of mind that Cage wanted to awaken with his work. According to this account, Cage’s awakened mind is a mind that is capable of experiencing that things exist. In order to defend this claim, I shall compare Cage’s descriptions of the experience of sounds as they are in themselves with the descriptions of the experience of existence that we find in authors like Wittgenstein, Heidegger, and Sartre.
