Classical sources through onomastics and hydronyms attest to the presence in the territory north of the Black Sea of nomadic Iranian populations. The Alans represent the last Iranian people to have inhabited this region for a very long time. Part of this population moved to the Roman Empire where the assimilation process was unusually rapid. They effectively represent the last European Iranian population and their history coincides with the dissolution of the Iranian element in Europe.
