A qualitative-quantitative analysis with MAXQDA The interviews of the so-called Israelkorpus – narrative biographical interviews with Israelis who fled from Germany or other German-speaking central European regions for racist and political reasons to Palestine/Israel mainly in the 1930s, and were interviewed between 1989 and 2019 by the linguist Anne Betten and her collaborators – represent family narratives in which various migration stories and experiences of expulsion and flight are told. The sub-corpus of my research includes the interviews conducted with speakers who were born and/or grew up in Austria: in most cases, their parents and grandparents came from other European regions where other languages besides German were spoken, therefore their family language biographies are extremely varied. Through a combination of qualitative and quantitative corpus linguistic approaches, I intend to show how some functions offered by the software MAXQDA can help to explore this oral corpus with regard to places and languages. In particular, the paper tackles the questions which places and languages are mentioned more frequently, to whom they refer (whether to the speakers themselves or to their relatives), and how often there is an overlap between the thematization of places and the narration about languages.
