Teacher education was a central focus of Maria Montessori's thinking. Based on an analysis of the content of several courses she held in Milan and India, the present study aims to elucidate the behavioural, functional and characteristic traits that Montessori believed teachers in her schools should embody. In her vision, education consists of providing children with the tools they need to realise their full potential as individuals, in a process of self-fulfilment that occurs in conjunction with others, and with awareness and responsibility towards the entire cosmos.

Abstract
