Chronic constipation represents a frequent condition in pediatric patients. Causes can be both organic and functional. Treatment for organic causes consists of the treatment of underlying conditions, whereas treatment for functional causes relies on multimodal therapy. The latter includes disimpaction, laxative therapy, and patient education. Parents should be an active part of the treatment. Treatment failure or relapses can occur, and further investigations are needed because of the presence of not diagnosed underlying conditions. Specific treatment can be considered for treatment failure such as stress reduction therapy, neurostimulation, biofeedback therapy, anal sphincter release, and sacral nerve stimulation.
