The essay explores some aspects of the relationship between Islam, the Islamic world, and radical Reformation currents from the sixteenth to the late seventeenth centuries. In particular, it focuses on the polemical uses of accusations of pro-Islamism by Reformation masters against exponents of religious radicalism; on Anabaptism and anti-Trinitarianism in the sixteenth century; on the Memnonites in the Netherlands; on Servet, his fortunes among Unitarians in Transylvania and some famous episodes of conversion to Islam; on religious dissent in Italy; on Quakers, England and early rationalist interpretations of Islam; on the relationship between religious radicalism and the emergence of Orientalist learning in Europe.
