Echi letterari della Costantinopoli di Giustiniano nella Renovatio Urbis di Niccolò V

The study proposes a comparison between the patronage of Pope Nicholas V and that of the emperor Justinian, furthering the hypothesis that the interventions carried out by the latter in Constantinople may have represented an important theoretical premise for outlining the paradigm of the renovatio urbis Romae. For this purpose, two texts have been compared, the ones which, in the absence of the lost or unfinished works of the two patrons, still allow us to compare their ideas and concrete choices, namely the Vita Nicolai V by Giannozzo Manetti and the De Aedificiis by Procopius of Caesarea. This study aims to evaluate whether the relationship between the two most important cities of the Roman Empire, which had seen ancient Rome serve as a model for the foundation of the New one, underwent an unexpected reversal in the 15th century, for which the papal Rome, called to collect the cultural heritage of the capital of the dying Byzantine Empire, would ideally have been rethought by looking at Constantinople, the Rome founded as a Christian, and at its urban image.

Lo studio propone una comparazione tra la committenza di papa Niccolò V e quella dell’imperatore Giustiniano, avanzando l’ipotesi che gli interventi compiuti da quest’ultimo a Costantinopoli possano avere rappresentato una importante premessa teorica per delineare il paradigma della renovatio urbis Romae. A tal fine, sono stati messi a confronto i due testi che, in mancanza delle opere perdute o incompiute dei due committenti, permettono ancora oggi di compararne le idee e le scelte concrete, ovvero la Vita Nicolai V di Giannozzo Manetti e il De Aedificiis di Procopio di Cesarea. Nel testo si cercherà di valutare se il rapporto tra le due più importanti città dell’Impero Romano, che aveva visto l’antica Roma fungere da modello per la fondazione della Nuova, abbia subito, nel Quattrocento, un inatteso capovolgimento, per cui la Roma papale, chiamata a raccogliere l’eredità culturale della capitale del morente Impero bizantino, sarebbe stata idealmente ripensata guardando a Costantinopoli, la Roma fondata come cristiana, e alla sua immagine urbana.
