Highly efficient constructions of mechanically interlocked molecules, such as catenanes and rotaxanes, have followed rapidly in the wake of the development of self-assembly in synthetic supramolecular chemistry. The opportunity now exists to control the relative dispositions of one component with respect to the other(s) in such molecules by either chemical or electrochemical means.

Abstract
