Starting from the premise that digital technology started an actual revolution that is deeply changing all areas of daily life, this essay focuses on the impact of this revolution on the public sector. More specifically, our goal is to highlight the influence of the digital transformation in how Public Administrations are organized, how individual proceedings are internally managed and, above all, how much the relationship with citizens, businesses and other Public Administrations is affected. After a brief overview on the approaches adopted internationally, the essay focuses on the European and Italian provisions in order to underline how they share the same premise: the public sector can and should play a key role in promoting the digital transformation, and that is both for the advantages in terms of process effectiveness and efficiency, whose positive impact involves the whole economic system, and for the need to balance innovation with the values of solidarity and inclusion - hallmarks of the European and Italian societies - also by investing in training
