The Excavation at Kayalıpınar – Samuha 2023: A Preliminary Report

During the 2023 season, excavations continued in Operations (henceforth Op) A, B and C, with the main aim to understand the settlement development, layers and stratigraphy of Kayalıpınar. As already discussed, excavations at Kayalıpınar are currently carried out only in two plots (106/33 and 106/24), as the majority of the land covered by the ancient settlement has not been expropriated. These plots are located on the southern side of the entire spread of the site, and are situated parallel to the Kızılırmak. Hence, the exploration of the site is currently limited to the southern side of the total settlement area.3 The unexplored part of the ancient settlement extends to the North, to the West, and the and the East of the two expropriated plots.
