Villonodular synovitis is an inflammatory condition of race horses mainly affecting the metacarpophalangeal joint. It is generally considered to be a chronic hypertrophy of the synovial pad of fibrous and adipose tissue of the joint, caused by trauma. This paper presents 5 cases of villonodular synovitis, with special attention to an acute case, its features and the comparison with chronic cases. Histology, immunohistochemistry, and transmission electron microscopy have been carried out with special attention to microvessels expression in the lesion compared to control normal tissue.
