Un modenese a Ostra: l'Annunciazione di Antonio Consetti

The article assigns the unpublished Annunciation from the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Rosa in Ostra to Antonio Consetti from Modena. Apprenticed in Bologna, to the workshops of Gian Gioseffo Dal Sole and Domenico Creti, he became court painter to the Este family and superintendent of the ducal gallery, obtaining commissions also outside the Duchy of Modena and Reggio. The attribution benefits from comparisons with other works by the artist, including the Immac￾ulate Conception and Saints of Pieve Fosciana, in Garfagnana (at the time Este territory), dated 1742. A drawing, conserved in the Poletti Library in Modena, when placed beside to the painting, would seem to demonstrate the originality of Consetti’s formal elaboration process. Finally, it is suggested that the commissioner was Bishop Ippolito Rossi, originally from San Secondo Par￾mense, who governed the diocese of Senigallia from 1746.
