After the collapse of the Napoleonic Empire and the apparent end of all residual ties to revolutionary ideology, for many former revolutionaries the time came for a reasses sment of the recently concluded age. The Essai sur les garanties individuelles of P.-C.-F. Daunou, first published in 1818 and destined for widespread success, presented a mili tant reinterpretation of the revolutionary past. In it, the condemnation of the distortions perpetrated by specific exceptional governments – from Robespierre to Napoleon – was accompanied by the intent to outline a program for the newly inaugurated order.
