This paper examines some paragraphs of the Syro-Roman Lawbook, a work of late antique Eastern jurisprudence that has come down to us through some manuscripts, the most authoritative of which is written in Syriac. The specific subject of the investigation, which is part of a broader project, is the legal institution of the manumissio in ecclesia, as it is regulated in the Syro-Roman Lawbook and in the other sources at our disposal, i.e. C. 1.13.1 (316) and CTh. 4.7.1 (= C. 1.13.2; 321).
