Since 2020, the University of Bologna initiated the archaeological excavations at Cervia Vecchia. This research began by applying a sampling strategy with trenches to assess the archaeological potential of the site and gather data about its historical evolution. The preliminary results shed light on several aspects of the urban layout of Cervia Vecchia between the Late Middle Ages and the beginning of the Modern Age (13th-17th c. CE), including the city’s military structures, its productive and residential zones, and its religious landmarks.
