After a brief introduction to the mythological-religious background of the figure of the dragon (azhdahā) in pre-Islamic Iran, the author turns to the exploration of the theme in Neo-Persian narrative poetry from Ferdowsi (11th century) onwards. The heroic-legendary figure of Sām as a dragon slayer, present in both Zoroastrian religious literature and the Persian epics of the Islamic period, is at the centre of the study. The dragon motif in its various aspects is analysed here in particular in the ‘Book of Sām’ (Sām-nāme), a work of uncertain authorship with an ancient core that probably dates back to the 11th-12th centuries, and subsequent additions and adaptations up to the 16th-17th centuries in the midst of the Safavid era. However, other epics are also taken into account, such as Ferdowsi’s ‘The Book of Kings’ (Shāh-nāme) and Khwāju Kermāni’s ‘Gol and Nowruz’ (Gol o Nowruz) (14th century). In these poems, in addition to the dragon-hero connection, other topoi appear, such as the dragon's relationship to treasure or other vital resources (water sources, kidnapped maidens), as well as to magic.
