New Documents on the Life of Jacob Mantino in the State Archive of Rimini

This article investigates the life and influence of Jacob Mantino, a prominent Jewish physi- cian,translator, and intellectual of the early 16th century, through newly discovered documents from the State Archive of Rimini. Mantino, a key figure in Jewish communities across Rome, Bologna, and Venice, was not only a crucial mediator between Jewish and Christian authorities but also a respected scholar. This study reveals Mantino’s significant role in negotiating tax issues for the Jewish community of Rimini and highlights his family’s continued prominence after his death. By examining these documents, the ar- ticle sheds light on the broader socio-political dynamics of Jewish life in the Papal States and Mantino’s enduring legacy in Jewish and Christian interactions during the Renaissance.
