The publication Index Naturae, edited in 2023, collected 116 photography books dealing with the theme of nature, realized in the last five years by national and international authors who have joined the project OMNE, Osservatorio Mobile Nord Est. The book, as well as the exhibition from which it originated, was conceived as an ephemeral library capable of proposing a reflection on the current state of photography and publishing through the selection and highlighting of different points of view on the relationship between man and nature in the contemporary world. The perspective of a collective vision, in which nature represented a single body within an open structure, was confronted with the autonomous languages and codes experienced by photography. On the one hand there was the idea of nature as macrocosm, on the other the choral dimension of the project, within which the paths of the authors involved built a series of visions that, approaching each other, intertwined cognitive and narrative trajectories in which nature took on different aspects and characters. The edition of Index Naturae - Alternative version, which accompanies a second installation of the exhibition, focuses precisely on the motivations and modalities of this juxtaposition, and on the intertwining of narratives that it is able to determine, hosted in Reggio Emilia as part of the nineteenth edition of Fotografia Europea. Thus a new interpretative key of the exhibition is proposed, aimed not so much at collecting editorial experiences around thematic nuclei that in some way bring them together by building possible genealogies, but rather to emphasize the open work value of this collection. The attempt to organize, systematize, according to criteria linked to the identification of recognizable lines of research, sometimes similar, different experiments, leaves room for the will to build a new possible order in which every testimony can regain its autonomy.
