This article describes the updates about the HEU NEWGEN research project1, after 18 months since its start. The NEWGEN project aims at developing and proofing a new generation of extruded HVDC cable systems, including not only novel insulating materials, but also new manufacturing, monitoring and diagnostics techniques, as well as models for life and reliability of the cable systems. Such generation of HVDC cables is believed to contribute to a reliable and resilient European transmission grid.
