This essay offers a cross-analysis of two American period dramas, Black Sails and Bridgerton, whose stories take place in the British imperial world – in the Caribbean and Britain, respectively – between 1715 and 1815. Building on recent scholarship on maritime history and British imperial history, we unveil the “forces of empire” that inform social, racial, and sexual relations both in the piratical Bahamas and in metropolitan London. More particularly, the essay draws a parallel between the patriarchal subordination of women in the marriage institution and colonial subjugation within the imperial framework.

Abstract
This essay offers a cross-analysis of two American period dramas, Black Sails and Bridgerton, whose stories take place in the British imperial world – in the Caribbean and Britain, respectively – between 1715 and 1815. Building on recent scholarship on maritime history and British imperial history, we unveil the “forces of empire” that inform social, racial, and sexual relations both in the piratical Bahamas and in metropolitan London. More particularly, the essay draws a parallel between the patriarchal subordination of women in the marriage institution and colonial subjugation within the imperial framework.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
