Variazioni diatopiche nel sottotitolaggio: il caso del dialetto di Kyōto nell'opera Maiko haaaan! di Mizuta Nobuo

This study focuses on the sociolinguistic issue of subtitling dialectal audiovisual texts in which the presence of a dialect plays a fundamental role in the narrative plot. The author shows the sociolinguistic difficulties which occur when trying to preserve the dialectal component in the target language and to vehiculate it by translating part of the dialogue of a Japanese film that features a relevant code-shifting between standard Japanese and the dialect of Kyōto. In particular, the author attempted to partially replicate the socio-cultural characteristics of the Kyōto dialect proposing the use of the Florentine variation of Italian.
