The paper discusses key issues related to labor market policies under a social pro-tection strategy with special reference to Asian developing economies. Labor mar-ket policies models in the world and in Asia are discussed first. These are followed by an analysis of sector policies based on a labor segmentation framework and with the purpose of illustrating sector specificities and relevant issues to be considered during the designing phase of a LMPs strategy. Next, the paper discusses a number of selected LMPs, their advantages and disadvantages, in the light of social protec-tion needs. The paper concludes by highlighting the main issues for LMPs today.
