This issue of Ri-Vista organizes nine contributions in the sections ‘New urban ecologies’ and ‘New sylvan meanings’, respectively focusing on new ecological equilibria incorporated into the urban sphere to compensate for its artificiality and on new identitarian meanings grounded over the territory by the expanding settlement and production systems. A third section presents experiences, proposals, and projects connected to water landscapes, underlining their state of unstable equilibrium, dynamism, continuous trans-formation that climate change seems to accelerate and exacerbate. The volume paints a non-classificatory, flexible, asystematic, and in-flux fresco of the difficult but fruitful relationship between landscape design and the ecological urgencies imposed by the current crisis, between the demands for protection, restoration, and reinvention of nature, within the metropolis and in the deep forest, and the equally pressing need to recover semantic legibility of a progressively more heterogeneous spatial apparatus: nature, construction, semantics, analogical and digital components and systems, collective agents of different character and scale, individuals and objects, but also networks, human, natural, and machinic identities. The fundamental theme remains on the one hand that of replanting parts of nature in the city to perform fundamental material and immaterial functions and on the other that of repairing the boundless nature systems of the deep forests, fragmented and entangled in the constructed anthropic bundles, large natural fragments, suffering but still crossed by profound vital currents.
