Thresholds in Medieval Germanic Languages and Literatures

The essay examines the terminology for 'threshold' in the main Indo-European languages, namely Sanskrit, Greek, Latin and the Romance languages. It focuses on ancient Germanic languages in particular. The lexical investigation is used as a starting point for an attempt to shed light on the different types of thresholds that the lexicon seeks to express. Therefore, the concept of threshold can be defined as a boundary, margin, and the metonymic use of threshold as marginality of men and diversity. Furthermore, the threshold represents a passage towards the supernatural dimension, as evidenced by extracts from the Icelandic sagas. The threshold is also a location where confrontations and interactions occur, necessitating close supervision and observation, including monitoring of emotions. Additionally, the threshold is a space of separation, as illustrated by the Gospel account of Peter's denial, particularly in view of the vocabulary employed in Greek and in the various translations into ancient Germanic languages.

Il saggio prende in esame la terminologia per ‘soglia’ nelle principali lingue indoeuropee (sanscrito, greco, latino, lingue romanze) soffermandosi, poi, in particolar modo, sulle lingue germaniche antiche. A partire dall’indagine lessicale si cerca di gettare luce sulle diverse tipologie di soglia che quel lessico vuole esprimere. Da qui il concetto di soglia come confine, margine, e l’uso metonimico della soglia come marginalità degli uomini e della diversità. La soglia è poi anche passaggio verso la dimensione sovrannaturale, ben esemplificata da passi tratti dalle saghe islandesi. La soglia è anche luogo in cui avvengono gli scontri e gli incontri – dunque luogo che necessita di particolare sorveglianza, anche emotiva. Infine la soglia è anche luogo della separazione, come esemplifica bene il passo evangelico del rinnegamento di Pietro alla luce del lessico impiegato per ‘soglia’ in greco e nelle diverse traduzioni in lingue germaniche antiche.
