Described by Heidegger as "the most powerful philosophical force in Germany, or rather, in Europe today, if not in contemporary philosophy in general," Max Scheler certainly did not achieve the same recognition as Husserl or even Heidegger himself, who, alongside Scheler, were key figures in the last great phase of German philosophy before the rise of Nazism. Nevertheless, Scheler’s impact on the internal development of philosophical reflection on topics such as the analysis of emotional life, intersubjectivity, the foundation of ethics, religion, cultural sociology, and anthropology is profound and universally acknowledged. In Italy, his works have been and continue to be translated, monographs and articles are published, and university courses are dedicated to his thought. Important Italian introductions to Scheler’s work, now out of print, have also been written, and this volume offers an updated presentation of his thought aimed at students and university professors of contemporary philosophy, theoretical philosophy, moral philosophy, philosophy of religion, and history of sociology.
