Since the middle of the XXth century, in most democratic countries the administration of justice has been the target of several reform efforts. In some cases the judicial system has been radically reorganized: for instance, in some newly consolidated democracies in Europe, Latin America or Asia, due also to the pressure exerted by supranational institutions like the European Union, the Council of Europe and the World Bank. In any case, in consolidated democracies judicial reform has also become one of the most significant public policies.

Abstract
