In this contribution I outline Heidegger's interpretation of Goethe and Hölderlin during the Forties. Heidegger contrasts Goethe's cosmopolitanism and Hölderlin's experience of the "Heimat", the fatherland. The Heimat in Hölderlin's sense has to do with Being and its history, and so it must not be misunderstood in nationalistic terms.
