This chapter gives a general overview of animal models in pediatric drug research. It covers the major animal species used for this purpose, namely mice, rat, rabbits, dogs, sheep, pigs, and nonhuman primates. The focus lies on key points and features of each animal species as model for children. Thereby, the comparative physiology is covered. Particular attention is given to study design as this is of pivotal importance for reproducibility and translatability of the study. Moreover, regulatory aspects should be taken into account. Thereby, it provides the reader a broad understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of animal models in pediatric drug design serving as a foundation for further preclinical and clinical research.
