Women represent approximately 4.2% of prison population in Italy. This percentage does not vary over time and configures the female population as marginal. Few correctional settings have programmatic resources or specially trained staff to address female offenders’ unique needs. This contribution intends to reflect upon possible contaminations between educational work in prison and gender issues, starting from a positioning grounded in feminist theories and interpretation of the condition of detention - even those that have integrated critical and abolitionist instances.According to E. Goffman (1961), the prison is seen as a total institution that alters the personalities of its inmates, depriving them of their characteristics. The corrective and normalizing means of the power relations that govern the prison structure (M. Foucault, 1975) want to be the subject of constant reflection. In this framework, particular attention will be given to gender discrimination and violence against women. The epistemological attention to gender also pertains to the fact that often the educational and training projects implemented with women (as well as with non-heterosexual and/or non-cisgender subjectivities, who suffer the violence of heteronormative structures) exclude cultural experience and, above all, are not attentive to differentiation of practices and gender-based tools.

Abstract
The epistemological attention to gender also pertains to the fact that often the educational and training projects implemented with women (as well as with non-heterosexual and/or non-cisgender subjectivities, who suffer the violence of heteronormative structures) exclude cultural experience and, above all, are not attentive to differentiation of practices and gender-based tools.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
