Chinese contemporary art is often considered to have been born between the late 1970s and early 1980s, influenced by both Western thought and Chinese modern and contemporary history, reflecting the realities of Chinese society, presenting a complex intertwined developmental relationship with Western contemporary art, and constructing a unique cultural phenomenon in its participation in the international arena. In the context of the post-birth of Chinese contemporary art, China’s participation in the Venice Biennale twice in the 1980s with handcrafts is the focus case of this study. By revisiting the historical facts of China’s participation in the Biennale in the 1980s, this article focuses on why Chinese contemporary art failed to participate. The essay is divided into four parts: a statement of the development of Chinese contemporary art in the 1980s; an introduction to the historical facts of Chinese participation in the Venice Biennale in the 1980s; an analysis of the main reasons for the failure of Chinese contemporary art to participate in the Biennale in the 1980s; and a summary of the significance of exposing the history mentioned above for the understanding of Chinese participation in the Biennale and the Sino-Italian exchange.
