The Invitatorium ad amorem sancte humilitatis is a text of meditation and introspection, constructed as a dialogue between the author and his soul, on the meaning and reasons for the love of humility. The contribution identifies two redactions of it and offers the edition of the oldest, fully documenting the subsequent. The earliest redaction of the Invitatorium must have been composed in the first decades of the 14th century, perhaps in Italy and probably in a Minoritic environment and undoubtedly by an author who led a regular life. He deliberately wanted the work to circulate anonymously. The commentary examines stylistic aspects (also in relation to William of Aquitaine’s Dieta spiritualis) and doctrinal aspects (also in relation to authentic texts by Bonaventure). The circumstances under which this anonymous text in a fifteenthcentury branch of its tradition was improperly attributed to Bonaventure are discussed.
