Le trasformazioni della chiesa nei secoli XIX, XX e XXI: da Casa di lavoro e di pena a deposito di opere d’arte

The female Benedictine monastery of Santa Croce alla Giudecca was considered especially holy in fifteenth-century Venice. Led by prestigious abbesses governing under strict religious reforms, it held the precious body of the eastern saint Athanasius and was the site of miracles. This book is the first entirely dedicated to the nunnery and considers the site, its buildings, and remaining manuscripts, books, and documents from the monastery’s inception through the restorations of the buildings in the 19th and 20th centuries. While much has been lost, the authors have been able to analyze tantalizing and unique remains, including extremely rare architectural plans of the fifteenth century that were made for the nuns. Numerous manuscripts, books, and documents, many previously unstudied, are also considered here to illuminate the artistic, religious, and social contributions of this important Venetian institution.

Il monastero benedettino femminile di Santa Croce nell’isola della Giudecca aveva fama di gran santità nella Venezia del XV secolo. Guidato da nobili badesse, che lo governavano aderendo ai principi di una riforma religiosa sempre più severa, il cenobio conservava il prezioso corpo di Atanasio, un santo d’Oriente, ed era ritenuto un luogo di miracoli. Questo libro è il primo interamente dedicato al monastero, di cui prende in considerazione l’area urbana, gli spazi, e i libri illustrati – a stampa e manoscritti – attraverso un arco di tempo che va dagli inizi della comunità fino alle pesanti alterazioni subite dagli edifici nel XIX e nel XX secolo. Sebbene molto sia andato perduto, gli autori hanno potuto analizzare testimonianze uniche e affascinanti, tra cui rarissimi progetti architettonici del XV secolo realizzati per le monache. Numerosi manoscritti, libri e documenti, molti dei quali inediti, vengono qui presi in considerazione per fare finalmente luce sul contributo artistico, religioso e sociale di questa importante istituzione alla storia e alla cultura di Venezia.
